Shopify Sidekick vs ChatGPT vs Claude for running your store

Since May 2026 merchants can manage a Shopify store from ChatGPT or Claude as well as Sidekick. A task-by-task comparison of what each can read, change and automate, what it costs, and which to use for which job.

By the MerchantSkill team at Pixelspiece Solutions, a Shopify Partner. Data as of 19 September 2026. We build MerchantSkill, a free library of Sidekick skills; we are not affiliated with any product on this page.

Quick verdict

Use Sidekick for the daily loop inside the admin: reports, discounts, segments, Flow, theme blocks and Shopify Email. Use the ChatGPT or Claude connector when a task mixes store data with outside data or needs a long document. Most stores end up with both, and neither costs extra on the Shopify side.

For most of 2025 the answer to "which AI should I use for my Shopify store" was easy: Sidekick, because it was the only assistant that could see your store. That changed on 4 May 2026 when Shopify released official apps that connect a store to ChatGPT and Claude, and a manage-only connector for Perplexity. Three assistants can now read your orders, products, customers and analytics and, within limits, change them.

They are not interchangeable. Sidekick lives inside the admin and can do things the connectors cannot, such as building Shopify Flow automations, generating theme blocks and creating customer segments. The connectors live in a chat app and can do things Sidekick cannot, above all combining your store data with anything else you paste or upload, from a Meta Ads export to a supplier price list.

This page compares the three on the jobs merchants actually run every week. It is written by the team behind MerchantSkill, a free library of Sidekick skills, and we have tried to be as even-handed as the sources allow. Where a capability is documented by Shopify we say so; where we could not verify it, the matrix says so too.

Shopify Sidekick

By Shopify · Visit

Sidekick is the AI assistant built into the Shopify admin. It is free on every plan, opens from the top-right of the admin and on the mobile app, and can read and act on store data with the same permissions as the staff member using it.

Strengths
  • Free on every Shopify plan with no extra account.
  • Widest set of actions: discounts, customer segments, collections, Shopify Email drafts, Flow workflows, custom apps on Grow and above, theme blocks on Horizon themes, image generation.
  • Compound tasks since the Summer 2026 Edition: one prompt can create a collection, a timed discount and an email draft together.
  • Saved skills: up to 25 slash-command prompts per user, shareable by link, with a review step and safety checks.
  • Review screens inside the admin before anything changes.
Weaknesses
  • Cannot see anything outside Shopify: no ad platforms, email tools, analytics suites or spreadsheets.
  • Cannot edit Liquid or change layout on themes that are not built on Horizon.
  • Drafts stay inside Shopify Email; if you send with Klaviyo or Omnisend you copy the text over.
  • Conversation memory is per user and per chat.

Best for: Daily operations inside the admin, anything that needs Flow or theme blocks, and teams that want the same task runnable by everyone with one shortcut.

ChatGPT with the Shopify app

By OpenAI, connector by Shopify · Visit

Shopify's official app for ChatGPT lets ChatGPT build a store from a storefront preview or manage a store you own. You authorize it from the Shopify side and choose how much data it can access.

Strengths
  • Combines store data with anything else in the chat: ad exports, email metrics, supplier files, competitor notes.
  • Long-form work: content calendars, negotiation drafts, multi-page documents, image generation in the same chat.
  • Keeps projects and history together; the same conversation can span days.
  • Reads products, orders, customers, analytics and inventory; can create products, update prices, adjust inventory, create discounts and tag orders.
Weaknesses
  • Does not build Flow automations, create customer segments or touch the theme.
  • Cannot refund or cancel orders, change store settings or bulk-edit.
  • Requires a ChatGPT account; some capabilities depend on your ChatGPT plan.
  • Uploadable skill files are limited to business plans as of our last check.

Best for: Monthly analysis that blends store and marketing data, and merchants who already run their business from ChatGPT.

Claude with the Shopify app

By Anthropic, connector by Shopify · Visit

The Shopify connector for Claude gives Claude read access to orders, customers and analytics and read-write access to products, collections, inventory, percentage-off discount codes, pages and menus, while respecting the staff permissions of the person who connected it.

Strengths
  • Documented, specific scopes: read-only orders, customers and analytics; read-write products, collections, inventory, discount codes, pages and menus.
  • Skill files can be uploaded on every Claude plan, and since September 2026 Claude for Small Business ships a Shopify plugin with ready-made e-commerce workflows.
  • Strong at long documents and structured analysis with pasted CSV exports.
  • Respects staff permissions, so a collaborator cannot do more through Claude than in the admin.
Weaknesses
  • Cannot edit the live theme, refund or cancel orders, change settings or batch-edit.
  • No Flow, no segments, no theme blocks.
  • Requires a Claude account; some capabilities depend on your Claude plan.
  • Scheduled rather than event-triggered: it cannot react to an order the moment it arrives.

Best for: Merchants who want documented, permission-aware access from a chat app, and teams already using Claude for writing and analysis.

Where Sidekick wins

Anything that touches Shopify's own automation and storefront layers is Sidekick territory. A prompt like "build a Flow that tags customers vip when their total spend passes 500" produces a workflow you can review and switch on. The connectors have no equivalent; they can tag a customer today but cannot set up the rule for tomorrow.

The same is true of theme blocks on Horizon-based themes, customer segments, Shopify Email drafts and, on Grow plans and above, custom apps. Since the Summer 2026 Edition Sidekick also executes compound tasks, so a flash sale that needs a collection, a timed discount and an email can be one approval instead of three tools.

Sidekick's skills feature is the other reason to keep it central. Each user can save 25 prompts as slash commands and share them by link, which is what makes a library like MerchantSkill possible. A weekly review or a low-stock check becomes something a new hire runs on day one.

Where the connectors win

Sidekick sees Shopify and nothing else. The moment a question needs return on ad spend, email revenue by campaign or a supplier's price list, you need a tool that can hold two datasets at once. Paste a Meta Ads export and ask Claude or ChatGPT to reconcile it with orders by day, and you have a blended report Sidekick cannot produce.

The connectors are also better at long output. A 30-day content calendar, a wholesale negotiation email thread or a policy rewrite with tracked changes are comfortable in a chat app and awkward in a side panel. Both tools keep history and files in projects, so the analysis you did in August is still there in November.

The trade-off is scope. Neither connector builds Flow, creates segments or edits the theme, and both are explicit that they cannot refund, cancel, change settings or batch-edit. That is a sensible boundary; it also means the daily operational loop stays in the admin.

Cost and permissions

On the Shopify side all three are free. Sidekick is included on every plan. The ChatGPT and Claude apps are free to install and authorize. What you pay for is the chat app itself: features such as file uploads, projects, voice and skill files depend on your ChatGPT or Claude plan, and those plans change often enough that we do not list prices here.

Permissions differ in a way that matters for teams. Sidekick acts with the permissions of the staff member using it. The Claude connector documents that it respects staff permissions and lists exactly which objects are read-only and which are read-write. For ChatGPT, Shopify's guidance is that you choose how much data the tool can access when you authorize it; review that screen carefully, because there is no sandbox mode for either connector.

Our recommendation

Keep Sidekick as the operating layer and add one connector for analysis and long-form work. There is no reason to pick only one.

  • Daily and weekly operations, discounts, segments, Flow, theme blocks, Shopify Email: Sidekick.
  • Blended reporting with ad or email data, long documents, work that spans days: ChatGPT or Claude with the Shopify app.
  • If you want documented scopes and permission awareness from the chat side, the Claude connector's help page is the most specific.
  • Save the tasks you repeat as Sidekick skills so the operating layer runs the same way for everyone on the team.

Frequently asked

Can ChatGPT or Claude replace Sidekick?

Not for automations, segments, theme blocks or Shopify Email. They can replace Sidekick for one-off analysis and writing, especially when outside data is involved.

Does connecting ChatGPT or Claude cost anything on Shopify?

No. The apps and connectors are free. Your ChatGPT or Claude subscription determines which chat features you have.

What about Perplexity?

Shopify offers a manage-only connector for Perplexity. It cannot build a new store and we have not tested it enough to include it in the matrix.

Is there a sandbox to test what a connector will change?

Not that Shopify documents. Both connectors act on the live store within the scope you authorized, and the Claude connector lists which objects are read-only.

Can I use MerchantSkill skills in ChatGPT or Claude?

The skill text is plain language and works as a prompt in any assistant with the Shopify connector. Native connector versions and downloadable skill files for the most used skills are planned; every skill page already offers a raw markdown link.

How we compared

Capabilities come from Shopify's help centre pages for Sidekick, Sidekick skills, connecting AI tools and the Shopify connector for Claude, and from Shopify's Edition announcements. We ran Sidekick on a live store; connector claims are taken from documentation and marked ⚠️ where the documentation is silent.

We did not test plan-dependent chat features, so account and plan rows say "features vary by plan" rather than guessing.

MerchantSkill is a Sidekick skills library made by Pixelspiece Solutions, a Shopify Partner. We are not affiliated with Shopify, OpenAI or Anthropic.
