How to create, save and share a Sidekick skill
The three ways to save a skill in Shopify Sidekick, how to run it with a slash shortcut, and how sharing by link works.
Updated 19 Sept 2026
A Sidekick skill is a saved prompt with a shortcut. Instead of retyping “show me yesterday’s sales by product, compared with last week” every morning, you type /yesterday-sales. Shopify added skills to Sidekick in October 2025. Each user can keep up to 25.
Three ways to save a skill
From a MerchantSkill page. Click Add to Sidekick. Your Shopify admin opens with the skill’s shortcut and instructions filled in. Review them, then click Add. If the button does not open the review screen in your store, use the next method.
From scratch. Open Sidekick in your admin (the icon at the top right). Type / and choose Create new skill. Give it a shortcut name such as weekly-review, paste the instructions, and save.
From a message you already sent. After Sidekick gives you a good answer, hover over your original message and click the skills icon. Sidekick turns that prompt into a skill; edit the shortcut and instructions, then save.
Running a skill
Type / in the Sidekick chat. Your skills appear in a list. Pick one or keep typing the shortcut. If the skill has placeholders like [TIMEFRAME], either edit them before you send or answer Sidekick’s question.
Editing and deleting
Open the skills list from the plus icon, then the skills icon. Each skill has edit and delete controls. You can rename a shortcut at any time.
Sharing by link
Open a skill and choose Share. Sidekick copies a link. Anyone with a Shopify store who opens it sees the shortcut and instructions, and can add it to their own Sidekick. Shopify runs safety checks on shared skills. This is how the Add to Sidekick buttons on this site work.
The 25 limit
Sidekick keeps 25 skills per user. Teammates each have their own 25. Use the planner to pick a set that fits, and keep shortcut names short and distinct.
